Challenge: The Classics

Posted 21 October, 2012 by Rinn in Challenges / 6 Comments

I have read some of them at least!

I have decided to set myself another challenge – to read more classics! There is not a strict timeframe. I suppose what makes a book a ‘classic’ is very open to interpretation – but for me it’s something that’s well known, generally an older book, and has received a lot of attention (bad or good, such as Lolita).

As for classics I have read, I’d highly recommend The Iliad, BeowulfLa Reine Margot by Alexandre Dumas, War of the Worlds by H.G. Wells and Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov.

And the only ‘classic’ book that I’ve wanted to throw across the room… The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne. One reading was enough.

    • Well done for reading it though! Definitely going to have to read plenty of more contemporary fiction in between some of these =P

Tess of the D’Ubervilles put a nail in the coffin for classical reading a while ago, but as soon as I’ve finished the complete collection of The Brothers Grimm, I’m going to attempt Wuthering Heights again, I’ve struggled with it the past few times I’ve tried.

    • I read Wuthering Heights at 14 for school, and then tried to re-read it recently and also struggled. I hope you succeed this time =)
